Onwards and UPwards

Up! magazine is lovely magazine full of positivity and people talking about their passions; each monthly issue is on a specific theme.

I, unexpectedly, found myself in the position of writing about superheroes for the 'heroes'-themed August 2023 issue. It's a difficult topic for me as I have quite conflicted opinions about the genre of superheroes and how it has impacted the medium of sequential art that I love.

However, writing the piece gave me an opportunity to reflect on how I feel and what superheroes mean, and why I think their popularity persists. I found it interesting, and, in addition to the rambling, I did a couple of drawings of, e.g., a not-Batman doing a kickflip.

So, Promethea (by Alan Moore, J.H. Williams III et al) is flipping tremendous. I recently re-read it all and wrote a short review for Readers of the Lost Art explaining why it's so tremendous. You should perhaps read this Promethea review now.

Comic-to-film adaptation article

After being incensed last year that someone should choose to make a film of Watchmen, I resolved to write a fairly chunky piece looking at the process of comic-to-film adaptations. It took a while for me to work out what I was trying to say, but it's done now and I think you should read it here on the Readers of the Lost Art site.



I know comments aren't active, but if you know me, do feel free to discuss this in person, I think it's a pretty interesting topic. If you don't know me, maybe you could discuss it with people you do know who read comics and/or watch films. Or not, I mean who am I tell you what to do, I don't even know you, honestly the presumption of some people, I do apologise...

A Local review for local people

Should you wish to read a review of the rather good Local by Brian Wood and Ryan Kelly, I've written one for the Readers of the Lost Art website. Check it out here.

It's moderately in-depth, but a little dry and lacking in humour (the review, not the book - the book is... well, just read the review, fool!).

There are a bunch of other reviews up there by the Readers of the Lost Art crew, including a few by me, although I must shamefully admit that this is my first for quite a while.

Most notable of my reviews is quite a large review/analysis/rant about Marvel Civil War specifically, and more generally, the problems of mainstream superheroics - it can be found here. If you disagree with it, you're wrong.
